But these have completely replaced solid fuel rockets at our house. They are fast to set-up, no electricity, no motors to buy, no igniters to fail, no parachutes to either fail or carry your rocket into the next town. You do trade that great WHOOSH sound for a VERY loud POP at take-off.The rockets are heavier, so they don't get blown by the wind much. The altitude can get to several hundred feet if you use several discs at once. They are much more fun than solid fuel rockets because you can launch at a spur of the moment. You don't have to go find an open field or remember to check batteries or count engines and igniters. The kids want some fun? I bought one of these. The science project is due soon so this past Saturday we took it to the park. It was 19� F at the park. The unit was easy to set up and use but we ran into a few problems.1) The launch pipe had a large burr left from the tubing cutter. 2) The kit rockets don't fit the launch pipe, even w/o the burr. 3) The air line forms a 6" arc under the platform and prevents it from sitting level. We removed the burr by grinding the end of the tube on a sidewalk. Thinking we might lose the kit rockets we bought a pack of "Tridium" rockets: those fit on the tube. We ended up curing the 6" radius the following morning. We used our large bicycle pump to pressurize the rocket. Our bike pump has a pressure gauge attached. Our first launch used one white disk: it burst around 80psi. Two white disks required about 160psi. One red disk also took about 160psi to... It is easy to launch and goes incredibly high. We even doubled up the disks and it worked fine and went even higher. It goes so high you can't even see it in the sky. The kids love chasing after it when it comes down. Nice simple design and easy to use. Might want to buy a few back up rockets, ours have gotten a little beat up from getting stuck in trees and such. |
